Courage

Try Again

“Sometimes courage is the little voice at the end of the day that says, I’ll try again tomorrow.”

President Thomas S. Monson

Short post today but as we come closer to the Holidays, that season that is filled with the Spirit of Christ often people become discouraged.

They didn’t find that perfect gift, they don’t have the money to make this Christmas as special as the last one, they can’t be with their family and various other things.

In life we make mistakes, we won’t always have the perfect day and we will make mistakes. Often those mistakes can seem earth shattering to us.

However when we realize we don’t need to tackle the world in one day and that the mistakes of today don’t determine our future. We will find success in the future.

So maybe you failed today, try again tomorrow and learn from those mistakes. As you keep trying our Heavenly Father will bless you and you will be able to overcome. Things will be all right in the end.

Children of God

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, “Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and famous?”

Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God.
Your playing small doesn’t serve the world.
There is nothing enlightened about shrinking
so that other people won’t feel insecure around you.

We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us.
It’s not just in some of us.
It’s in everyone, and as we let our own light shine,
we consciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear,
our presence automatically liberates others.

a poem by Marianne Williamson

This poem is powerful, it has truth and to me it is inspiring.

What stands out to me the most is the second stanza. Its so common in life for people to take the easy way, or to take the backseat in life and to just go through the motions. Rather than using the talents their Heavenly Father has blessed them with they prefer to be comfortable and just do the minimum.

This is especially huge in pianists in the Church.

So some background, in the Church music is an integral part of life. We sing hymns in nearly all our meetings and so what’s needed is people to lead and accompany the music and its the leaders responsibility to find those people.

However that is something far easier to say than to do.

For many Bishops and other leaders though finding ward musicians can be a challenge to say the least. To begin with there usually are only a handful of people who can play or know enough to lead the music.

And out of this handful there are those who don’t feel comfortable using their talent because their afraid to make a mistake.

So all this accounts to making it very hard to fill those callings.

Back at college my bishop when he learned I played the piano immediately asked if I was willing to play at church. I responded I was but I didn’t understand why.

In our ward there were several music majors, all far more talented than me. Why did I need to play when I make common simple mistakes while accompanying when there were those who will one day be master pianists in the same congregation.

In response to my question Bishop Hall responded, “You are needed to play, because you have the ability and the will, its not about who is more accomplished than you, all that matters in a calling is whether you will do your best.”

Wow, it doesn’t matter that I’m not the most skilled, it doesn’t matter that I make mistakes as we sing the closing hymn.

That was a new idea to me, I thought the most qualified were the best but that’s a common misconception.

One I had had for quite a long time.

Bishop Hall taught me right there. A wise man imparted the simple truth to an 18 year old boy that is true for every child of God no matter the situation.

Use the talents God has blessed you with to bring light to others.

By keeping that light hid we serve no one and we should want to serve everyone.

Just as Christ taught in Mathew¬†5:14, “Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid.”

So use that light, that talent that God has given you and inspire others. You might make mistakes but that’s okay because as others see you striving to be the best you can be you will be that example they need to let their light shine forth.

So no matter what you are asked to do, do it and know that as you strive to do your best and use the talents your Heavenly Father has given you you will be living to your potential.

Your potential as a Child of God.

So use your talents, be wonderful, magnificent, amazing and serve with all your heart might mind and strength. I can promise you it will be worth it.

After all you don’t want to just go through the motions in life, you want to live life to the fullest and that dear brothers and sisters is done by using all your talents and abilities, not just some of them.

So go be amazing. You are a Child of God.

Child of God

“No man knows h…

Its amazing how people can be inspired and what they can be inspired to do. This statement made by C.S. Lewis is one of my favorites so I want to share it with all of you.

“No man knows how bad he is till he has tried very hard to be good. A silly idea is current that good people do not know what temptation means. This is an obvious lie. Only those who try to resist temptation know how strong it is. After all, you find out the strength of the German army by fighting against it, not by giving in. You find out the strength of a wind by trying to walk against it, not by lying down. A man who gives in to temptation after five minutes simply does not know what it would have been like an hour later. That is why bad people, in one sense, know very little about badness. They have lived a sheltered life by always giving in. We never find out the strength of the evil impulse inside us until we try to fight it: and Christ, because he was the only man who never yielded to temptation, is also the only man who knows to the full what temptation means–the only complete realist.”

C.S. Lewis

Powers of temptation.

Many people in the world believe there is no right, there is no wrong, its all dependent on the situation. Many churches even believe that there is no Satan, that the references in the Bible to him are merely figurative but this is a lie.

Satan tempts us everyday, in a sense he’s one of our teachers. Everyday we learn from what we are tempted by and we must never give in because when we give in our learning stops. That is why Christ was able to perform the Atonement, he had never stopped learning so he knew everything there was to know about temptation and that is why he was able to overcome Satan, overcome the bonds of death. Because he was the ultimate best.
